Create Your Own Prints with Mono-printing & Make Cards
THIS CLASS IS FOR AGES 12-Adult and will be offered online.
Join Rita Arancibia, Arts for Hearts Co-Founder for a evening of exploring monoprinting. Monoprinting is a fun, accessible way to quickly create unique mono-printed papers and art. By using a variety of stamps, stencils, and found objects, artists can create an amazing range of effects. This addictive medium is great for fostering imagination, discovery, and experimentation. Prints can be used for collage, card making, and junk journal making.
WHAT YOU NEED:
The best tool is a Gel Press or Gelli Plate plate which can be purchased on Amazon, Michaels or Hobby Lobby. These can be purchased in a variety of sizes. I prefer an 8 x 10, but a 5 x 7 will work well too. You can also make your own gelli plate ( recipe below). If you are not able to purchase or make a gelli plate, you can use a piece of clear acrylic or a silicone baking mat. The latter two products will not give you the same prints as a gel plate.
Other materials needed for this class:
Paper of all kinds, printing paper, card stock, brown paper, deli paper/parchment paper, old pages from books, file folders, coffee filters, lined paper, tissue paper or any type of paper you might have on hand. (Newspaper or glossy magazine pages do not work well)
Acrylic paint (your favorite colors)
Preference is a brayer, but can use a large paint brush if you do not have a brayer.
Wipes, water, paper towel.
Lots of stuff you find around the house like round lids, wine corks, string, bubble wrap, cardboard, comb, plastic egg carton, any recyclable stuff that has a shape that you could print. Stencils are great too. You can create your own stencils using foam or use cut out shapes.
Hair dryer optional.
RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE GEL PLATE:J
8 Packets of gelatin ( can purchase any grocer store or Wal-mart.
12 ounces Glycerin - Can purchase at Wal-Mart or Amazon
8 packets of Knox unflavored gelatin or any generic brand. Available at your local grocery store.
One and a half cups of boiling water
One 8" by 8" or 9 x 13 pan with a smooth bottom.
Pour room temperature glycerin into a microwavable bowl.
Sprinkle gelatin into the glycerin and slowly stir.
Pour the boiling water into this mixture. Stir slowly.
Place in the microwave and give it an additional 50 seconds.
Pour into pan and allow it to set up on a level surface.
Rip a piece of paper towel to fit the eight inch pan and slowly drag it across the top.
This will clean the top of any foam or bubbles.
Let set for several hours.
Release from the pan and begin the fun. Pull the edges away from the sides with your fingers and the plate will drop out when the air gets under the plate. Drop unto a clean plastic acetate sheet or piece of saran wrap that you have wrapped around a piece of cardboard. Place another acetate sheet over the top of the gel plate or cover with plastic wrap. Store.
I tried this recipe and it worked well. I did find that to use the plate you will need to use the shiny side.
